Registered Equine Dental Practitioners
Many licensed veterinarians provide equine dental care. If a person is not an Arizona licensed veterinarian, he/she may register with the State as an Equine Dental Practitioner. That person must be certified by the International Association of Equine Dentistry or the Academy of Equine Dentistry and be under the general or direct supervision* of an Arizona licensed veterinarian, depending on the service being performed.
The equine dental practitioner must provide to the Board proof of certification and a written statement signed by the supervising Arizona licensed veterinarian. Both the supervising veterinarian and the equine dental practitioner must maintain dental charts for procedures performed. An equine dental practitioner may not prescribe or administer any drug or medicine, which includes types of anesthesia. The equine dental practitioner may not perform extractions unless a licensed veterinarian is physically present for the procedure.
*"Direct supervision" means a licensed veterinarian must authorize and be physically present for the procedure.
*"General supervision" means a licensed veterinarian must be available for consultation by telephone or other form of immediate communication.
